Gail A. Shafer-Crane, Ph.D., OTRL, Certified Hand Therapist,
President Dr.
Shafer is a 1971 graduate of Western Michigan University
with a Bachelors of Science in Occupational Therapy, a
1988 graduate of Western Michigan University with a Masters
of Public Administration, and was awarded a Doctorate in
Philosophy by the Michigan State University College of
Human Medicine in 2002. Her treatment experience as an OT
includes specializations in physically and mentally impaired children
and adults, splinting and adaptive equipment fabrication, cardiac
and pulmonary rehabilitation, and hand therapy. She was certified
as a hand therapist in 1991 by the Hand Therapy Certification
Commission. Dr. Shafer is an active member of the American
Society of Hand Therapists, the American Academy of Anatomists,
and the American Occupational Therapy Association.
In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Shafer is Assistant Professor of Anatomy in the Department of Radiology, College of Human and Osteopathic Medicine, Michigan State University where she teaches histology, neuroscience and human anatomy.
ARM Assessment Rehabilitation Management, Inc.
was founded by Dr. Shafer in 1988. It has grown from a hand therapy
private practice to a general orthopedic outpatient facility.
Dr. Shafer founded the Hand Institute of Michigan in 2003 to serve
educational and service needs in the central northern United States
and Canada.
Robin E. Kustasz, OTRL,
Certified Hand Therapist
Robin is a 1988 graduate of Wayne
State University with a Bachelors of Science in Occupational
Therapy. She received her certification as a Certified
Hand Therapist from the Hand Therapy Certification Commission
in 1995. She has been a senior therapist with ARM Assessment Rehabilitation Management,
Inc. since 1995. She is also certified in neuro-developmental
treatment. She has been actively involved in the American Society
of Hand Therapists and has attended numerous courses in hand
therapy and manual therapy techniques. Robin is a co-founder of the Hand Institute of Michigan and is a course coordinator for the annual education seminar.
Jeff Romig, PTA
Jeff graduated in 2007 with an Associate Degree in Applied Science as a Physical Therapist Assistant from Mott Community College. He has worked primarily in the out-patient orthopedics setting. Prior to his mid-life career change, Jeff worked in property management managing apartment communities, as well as coaching high school swim teams. He also received a Bachelors of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University where he was a successful Mid American Conference swimmer for four years.
Curtis P. Wood, OTRL, NSCA-CPT
Curtis is a 1999 graduate of Eastern
Michigan University with a Bachelors of Science in Occupational
Therapy. He received his certification as a Personal Trainer
from the National Strength and Conditioning Association
in 2002. Curtis has been a staff therapist with ARM Assessment-Rehabilitation-Management,
Inc. since May of 2000, with specialized focus on Hand Therapy,
Evaluation, Work Hardening Therapy (preparing patients for return
to work), and Functional Capacity Evaluations.
Past employment experiences in fast food, graphic arts, printing,
landscaping and automotive part manufacturing provide a broad
base of occupational knowledge, which is utilized for improved
understanding of patient needs and improved therapeutic outcomes.
